i'm steaming mad

a friend e-mailed me an article from this morning's LA Times about a court ruling that a particular high school in Roverside County could expel lesbians (or supposed lesbians) - you can read all about it here and then you'll understand why i'm steaming mad.

i respect the freedom of religion and that religious schools serve a purpose - there is a place for them in our society. i know that many religions view homosexuality as a sin - but why must people punish the "sinners" in such a way as to tear them down and traumatize them instead of showing some compassion and understanding? these were teenage girls! they may or may not be lesbians. they may or may not be straight. when one is a teenager, it's a time for exploration, growth and learning about who you are and who you want to be. it's a confusing time for most regardless of gender or sexual orientation. don't you remember being 16-years old and how freaked out you were? i know i sure was.

and for crying out loud, when is a picture of two girls hugging meant to be representative of a lesbian relationship? it doesn't matter to me how the girls identify. what matters is how they were treated - now that's wrong.

if i could draw, i'd have steam coming out of my ears and my face blown-up red. now if this were a yuri manga, how would this story play out?

now i'm not sure if i'm steaming mad or steaming sad.

I can see why you're mad. (My goodness! Hugging!) I wonder if this ruling got an extra boost from the momentum surrounding Proposition 8... As for how this would end if it were a yuri manga, if Konno Oyuki wrote it, it would probably have a good ending in which both of the girls grow in maturity and self-acceptance regardless of their orientation... and if the mangaka behind Maria Holic wrote it, the principal of the school would probably be the main character, and the girls would have man-allergies. So it depends on who the creator is. ;)
