in my last post, i mentioned i was headed to the Meshell Ndegecello concert. my friend, M, and i went down to J-town for dinner before heading to The Fillmore. we first stopped in at Suzu with a hankering for their ramen, but the wait was so atrociously long that we ended up at Mifune, where there was no wait and we were seated straight away. M ordered their ramen (filled with shrimp, chicken and veggies) while i opted for katsu-don (fried pork cutlet and egg served over rice). Mifune is always a good stand-by so i'm hardly ever disappointed plus service was speedy which was great since we were cutting it close to the 8pm start.
with our bellies full, we walked over to The Fillmore and found out there was no opening act. in fact, Meshell had already started her set so we headed right in and found a decent spot to watch her. things were going great, music was awesome and the crowd was happy, stoned, and happy - Meshell didn't talk much - she herself had said she doesn't like to talk much and that's why she sings. She sang mostly new songs and then at around 9pm, she thanked people for spending their money on the concert and bid every good-bye.
i was totally confused - and so was everyone else. M shot me that look of "WTF? it's 9pm!" people milled around and checked ticket stubs to see if the show started earlier or were they even in the right place on the right day. i'm perplexed and wonder if i missed something while this poor man near me was apologizing profusely to his girlfriend - they showed up at 9pm!
well, it turned out that Meshell was actually "co-headlining" with The Coup. first, what is co-headlining?! second, i didn't even know who The Coup were until 9:15pm when they showed up on stage. i had never heard of them. but man o man, what a crazy, awesome funk/hip-hop/rap group they were!
i don't listen to that genre of music much - i'm an indie folk & indie rock kinda girl, but The Coup were amazing, especially Pam the Funkstress! i would've never thought to scratch the turntables with breasts - and let me tell you, that took some talent - and great breasts.
